How's the first month of 2019 been for you?
It's been a bit bonkers for us in Zimbabwe! Unsettling, uncertain, and plain scary.
I'm finding it hard to focus on anything right now, but I'm also dying to share some information with you. It might make you feel confused, like it has me, but mainly, I hope it brings you some relief, like it has done for me.
Did you know that 95% of all diets fail?
And by success, I’m talking about what diets usually promise us: to lose weight. And by fail I mean after two to five years, 95% of dieters have put back on the weight and most often MORE weight than they had been carrying to begin with. And it's NOT YOUR FAULT.
Does this sound familiar to you? It sure does with me. I'll go into more detail in the next email but for now, think about it. Have you ever been on a diet that worked? Maybe it 'worked' for 2 months, 4 months, 6 months, but is it working for you now?
I've tried most of the diets and now that I'm realising that I've been sold a load of BS, it's made me pretty angry that I've wasted all that time since I was about 16 (probably even younger) worrying about my body.
So why diet? Because diet culture. Because, for such a long time now, we’ve been sold the idea that we are not good enough the way we are. That the ONLY way to look is slim and muscular.
It’s total crap.
So, my focus for January has been to let myself eat whatever I want and see what happens.
Mostly, I feel relieved that I’m not going to adhere to any food rules ever again - no more guilt, no more shame and no more bingeing on the other side of the restriction. No more missing social things in case there’s cake (mostly I’ve been missing social things due to Farm Life 😆 or because I've just not felt like going..). No more feeling superior over people because I’m such an ‘angel’ for eating no sugar/ no diary/ no this/ no that. No more judging people for what they eat. No more.
What a relief!
I invite you to try it. No rules, just for a month and see what happens. If you wanna eat it, eat it. Simple as that.
And what's on the other side of the no food rules? Does this mean that we should all just be fat and let ourselves go? (And by the way, 'fat' is not a bad word. It is just a word used to describe a body shape. Same as 'thin'. Same as 'tall'. Same as 'short'.)
Absolutely not. But that's for the next post.
Yours in health (not rules)
Kir
